When you first launch Elements, you get a veritable smorgasbord of options, neatly laid out for you in the Welcome screen ( Figure 1-1). If you have Elements 8 for Windows, there’s a separate edition of this book for that version, which has very different tools for organizing and sharing photos, although editing them is pretty much the same on both platforms. There are Missing Manuals for Elements 3, 4, and 6, too, and you may prefer to track down the right book for your version of Elements.

But getting around in Elements is a little different in Elements 8, so you’ll see lots of references to screen features and tools you don’t have. You can use this book if you have an earlier version of Elements because a lot of the basic editing procedures are the same. But if you’re still not sure, check your Applications folder: Elements is listed there as “Adobe Photoshop Elements” followed by the version number. The icon for Elements 8 is quite distinctive-it’s a bright blue square that says “pse”. If you’re not sure which version of Elements you have, the easiest way to find out is to look at the program’s icon (the file you click to launch Elements).

This book covers the Mac version Photoshop Elements 8. UP TO SPEED: Which Version of Elements Do You Have?
